POST COVID-19 PANDEMIC SIDE EFFECTS HYPERTENSION AND AYURVEDA

What is Hypertension?

Hypertension is nothing but it’s just another term that is used for high blood pressure. Now, what s high blood pressure? Any blood pressure that is higher than normal is known as high blood pressure. They’re nothing to be worried about if it slightly changes upward or downward because blood pressure doesn’t remain the same. It changes throughout the day and it all depends on the individual person that what all activities he or she is doing.
Blood Pressure or hypertension is the pressure of your blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. Whenever the heart beats, it pushes blood into the arteries.

Hypertension due to covid 19

There are two types of blood pressure and it depends on the heartbeat along with the flow of blood.

  1. Systolic Pressure – When the heart is beating and pumping the blood, the blood pressure is its highest peak at that time and this is known as Systolic Pressure.
  2. Diastolic Pressure – Whenever the heart is beating in between that break of every heartbeat blood pressure automatically lowers down that is known as Diastolic Pressure.

Blood pressure is measured in two numbers, one is systolic blood pressure and another one is diastolic pressure. For example, the normal blood pressure is 120/80. In this 120 is systolic and 80 is diastolic blood pressure. The first number is always systolic blood pressure that measures the pressure of blood in your arteries when your heart beats and the second number is always diastolic blood pressure that measures the pressure when the heart is at resting mode and this occurs in between heartbeats.

If we talk about hypertension that is high blood pressure then it is not a rare issue it is one of the most common health issues that is found in almost every fourth or fifth person. High blood pressure can cause serious health issues which can even lead to death but not always because it can be controlled or taken care of by taking proper medication and control over eating habits and some other precautions.

High blood pressure can affect your blood vessels, brain, heart, kidneys and the most fearful thing is it can also increase the changes of heart disorder and stroke. High blood pressure can also hurt the arteries and that can decrease the flow of blood which means the heart has to work strongly to pump sufficient blood. Because of this, the heart can get weak.

COVID-19 AND HYPERTENSION

It is proved in various studies and research that people with high blood pressure are at high risk of having the covid-19 infection. Not only covid-19 infection but having high blood pressure even increases the chances of death due to covid-19.
The reason behind this is that having any health issue will weaken your immune system and weak immune system, obviously cannot fight against the covid virus. The main reason why the coronavirus is deadly for high blood pressure patients is that the heart is affected by high blood pressure and the coronavirus also directly damages the heart.
Apart from this, there is also one more serious issue that, if someone who is already suffering from heart disease if get infected by any respiratory illness like any flu, asthma or coronavirus.

CAUSES

  1. Obesity – If someone is overweight then that person’s heart has to work hard to pump blood through the body and this puts strain on arteries and because of this arteries resist the flow of blood which causes blood pressure.
  2. Lack of physical activity – It is a commonly known thing that lack of physical activity causes many health issues. Hypertension is highly related to cardiovascular disease. Physical activity reduces blood pressure that’s why less activity and less fit people have a higher risk of having high blood pressure.
  3. More salt in the diet – When you eat too much salt which contains sodium, then your body needs more water to wash that off and it can increase the blood pressure.
  4. Smoking – Smoking can increase blood pressure immediately by 6% the reason behind this is the nicotine that is present in cigarettes, this increases the blood pressure and heart rate which is very dangerous for the health.
  5. Alcohol – Continuous use of alcohol develops a sustained rise in blood pressure which is harmful to health in many ways.
  6. Mental Stress – Whenever a person is under stress his or her body will produce a surge of hormones and these hormones increase the blood pressure not permanently but temporarily.
  7. Older Age – As people grow old their vascular system also changes, like arteries get stiffer and because of this blood pressure goes up.
  8. Genetics – There is not only one health problem but various health problems that occur due to genes. Angiotensinogen is the gene that is responsible for hypertension which may transfer from generation to generation.
  9. Chronic Kidney Disease – This is one of the most common reasons behind hypertension. The kidney plays a vital role to maintain the BP inaccurate range that 120/80 but obviously if the kidney is not working properly then it increases blood pressure.
  10. Thyroid Disorders – There are two situations, one is in which the thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone and the other one is just opposite in that thyroid gland produce too much thyroid hormone and in both the cases there are high chances of increasing blood pressure.

 AYURVEDA

Ayurveda explains blood pressure in its own term and according to Ayurveda it is explained as rakt gat vatta, rakt vriddhi, rakt vikshepa and this all is due to causative factors like stress. It all started from vyan vayu. First of all vyan vayu is dushit then dushit vyan vayu increased pumping and this leads to irregular rhythm and rise in blood pressure. After that pressure on the arterial wall raises and then after some time workload is increased and this all results in hypertension that is also known as high blood pressure.
The second factor that occurs in this process is that this also affects Agni and that affected Agni produces ama which results in increased blood pressure and then the same process repeated as mention above which causes hypertension.
